Finding a person of interest from the Investigation task

2025-09-30Last updated

To quickly find a person of interest, you can perform an investigation in Security Center SaaS using natural language search criteria and additional filters. The investigation information can then be reviewed and used to build a timeline of events including where the person went, who they interacted with, and what happened before or after an incident.

Before you begin

What you should know

Use the Investigation task when you have a description such as upper or lower clothing color, or an approximate time range, or where the incident took place including one or more cameras.
Important:
This procedure should only be performed on stationary camera deployments. Intelligent search on a moving camera is not supported because moving cameras do not provide consistent metadata.

Procedure

  1. From the vertical navigation bar, click Investigation.
  2. In the search field, enter your natural language search criteria and press Enter.
    For example:
    • "person wearing a red sweater and blue jeans"
    • "person wearing a white dress in the lobby yesterday afternoon"
Using a natural language search quickly refines relevant footage without manually scanning hours of video.
  3. (Optional) If natural language search returns too many matches, select filters to further refine the person of interest search results:
    What
    Select the Person radio button.
    When
Select a date or range from the calendar picker.
    Where
    Select one or more cameras.
    Upper body clothing color
Select the color you are looking for.
    Lower body clothing color
Select the color you are looking for.

Filters can be used on their own or with natural language queries. They are helpful when refining results or correcting initial descriptions.
Filters help to eliminate false positives and zero in on the likely person of interest.
  4. From the Thumbnail size list, select an appropriate thumbnail size to optimize the search results review process.
  5. Review the results to find your person of interest, and then select video thumbnails to see more details and options.
The selected video plays automatically in the video tile at the top of the side pane. The currently selected video frame, including clothing color filters, is shown immediately below the video player.

Reviewing thumbnails helps to validate matches quickly and avoid wasting time on irrelevant clips.
  6. In the Similar people section, review visual matches to see where a person of interest has been detected across different camera locations and time ranges, helping you to discover sightings and potential movement paths.
    1. Click Show more to expand the similar people section.
    2. Click the camera icon and select cameras to include or exclude from the similar people detection results.

  7. In the Nearby activity section, review people and vehicles in the surrounding area before and after the incident to reconstruct the scene, uncover interactions, and provide additional context.
    1. Click Show more to expand the Nearby activity section.
    2. From the People and vehicles list, select people, vehicles, or both.
    3. From the time range list, select a time range to increase or reduce the amount of nearby activity results displayed.
    4. In the search results or the side pane, select thumbnails of any potential matches to view in the video player at the top of the side pane.
  8. (Optional) Repeat one or more of the preceding steps to refine the criteria and review any other thumbnails that might be a match.
Completing this investigation process provides a timeline of events including where the person went, who they interacted with, and what happened before or after providing additional context about the incident with less manual effort. This helps investigators validate evidence and generate reliable leads with greater confidence.
