Configuring edge recording for Axis direct-to-cloud cameras
2026-06-25Last updated
To store video locally on your device instead of using the default cloud recording profile in Security Center SaaS, you can configure your camera for edge recording. Edge recording offers the possibility to save on storage costs while reducing the uplink bandwidth required to upload all recordings to the cloud.
Before you begin
- Add your recording profiles.
- Add your Axis direct-to-cloud cameras.
- Ensure that a supported SD card is inserted in your camera.
What you should know
Best Practice:
Edge recording should only be started by using the edge
recording profiles in the Configuration task. Starting edge recording
directly from the camera's web interface can cause unexpected errors and playback issues.
You can configure edge recording from the camera Settings
tab. You can also associate cameras with an edge recording profile from the
Recording profiles page. If the video retention in the selected
recording profile can’t be met or if SD card issues are encountered, warning messages are
displayed.
CAUTION:
When the edge recording profile is selected, the customer
manages recordings stored locally on an SD card. There's no fallback if an SD card is
unavailable or if the SD card fails. For more information about which SD cards to use with
your unit, see Axis documentation.
Motion-activated recording is not supported.

After you finish
- Periodically review your edge storage utilization in the Storage section of your camera Overview tab.
