Finding a person of interest from a monitoring tile

2026-03-16Last updated

To find a person of interest while monitoring or reviewing video, you can perform an investigation in Security Center SaaS using intelligent search. The investigation information can then be reviewed and used to build a timeline of events including movements, interactions, and what happened before or after an incident.

Before you begin

What you should know

  • This procedure needs a Security Center SaaS Premium Plan. For a summary of the key features and differences between the Standard and Premium plans, refer to the Security Center SaaS Features Matrix.
  • Use the Intelligent search feature from a monitoring tile to find a person of interest when you notice relevant activity while monitoring or reviewing footage, or when a reported incident includes a date, approximate time, and the camera that recorded it. You can visually trace similar-looking individuals across multiple cameras, manually review matches to create a timeline of their movements, and investigate nearby activity. Similar person detection uses non-biometric, appearance-based information, such as clothing or general features, to suggest possible matches without relying on biometric recognition.
    Note:
Intelligent search from a monitoring tile can be initiated using a non-forensic-capable camera, but the results (such as similar people, nearby activity, and so on) are generated from forensic-capable cameras with the Activate camera metadata checkbox selected.

Procedure

  1. In the Tiles task, double-click or drag a camera from the area view into a tile.
  2. Seek to a point of interest containing a person by doing one of the following:
  3. In the video player toolbar, click Intelligent search ().
    Note:
If you draw the box on an empty part of the camera scene, object detection will start instead of people detection. If you pause or resume the video, you might need to press Intelligent search () again.
    1. (Optional) Use video scrubbing to navigate the timeline, quickly viewing thumbnails to find relevant footage.
      Hover over the timeline
Move the mouse over the video timeline. A thumbnail preview appears above the timeline.
      Seek in the timeline
Click, hold, and drag the mouse along the video timeline.
    2. Use your mouse to draw a box around the person of interest.

    3. Click Investigate person to load results matching the selected person of interest.
      Important:
The search results and sections displayed in the side pane vary depending on the options you select, and change as you review or interact with video thumbnails in each section. Some of the following steps can be skipped if the section is not in your search results. Some of the steps can be repeated if you need to review multiple videos in each section.
      • To visit previously viewed videos, click Go back through previously reviewed videos () at the top of the video player dialog.
      • To return to the previous side pane menu or results, click back () next to the section title at the top of the side pane results pane.
    4. (Optional) To view how a person moved within the camera's field of view, click Show trajectory ().
  4. (Optional) In the Similar people section, review visual matches to identify potential sightings and movement paths.
    1. Click Show more to expand the Similar people section.
You can adjust the selected cameras and time range to explore additional matches.
    2. Click the camera icon to choose cameras to include or exclude from the similar people detection results.

    3. From the time range list, select a time range.

    4. In the search results or the side pane, select thumbnails of any potential matches to view in the video player.
  5. (Optional) In the Nearby activity section, review people and vehicles in the surrounding area before and after the incident to reconstruct the scene.
    1. Click Show more to expand the Nearby activity section.
From this point, you can modify the detection types and time range to find more matches.
      Note:
If your search involves outdoor cameras and your person of interest has entered, exited, or interacted with others in a vehicle, consider selecting People and vehicles.
    2. In the side pane, select thumbnails of any potential matches to view them in the video player.
  6. (Optional) Repeat one or more of the previous steps to refine the criteria and review any other videos that might match.
Completing this investigation process creates a timeline of events, showing where the vehicle or people went, who they interacted with, and what occurred before or after. This offers additional context about the incident with less manual effort and helps investigators verify evidence and develop reliable leads with increased confidence.
