Configuring edge recording for Axis direct-to-cloud cameras

2025-04-10Last updated

To store video locally on your device instead of using the default cloud recording profile in Security Center SaaS, you can configure your camera for edge recording. Edge recording offers the possibility to save on storage costs while reducing the uplink bandwidth required to upload all recordings to the cloud.

Before you begin

Ensure that a supported SD card is inserted in your camera.

What you should know

Edge recording is only available for Axis direct-to-cloud cameras that support SD cards and have firmware version 11.11 or later. Only one SD card is supported. If the device supports two SD cards and both are inserted in the device, recordings are only stored on one SD card.
Best Practice: Edge recording should only be started by using the edge recording profiles in the Configuration web app. Starting edge recording directly from the camera's web interface can cause unexpected errors and playback issues.
You can configure edge recording from the camera Settings tab. You can also associate cameras with an edge recording profile from the Recording profiles page. If the video retention in the selected recording profile can’t be met or if SD card issues are encountered, warning messages are displayed.
CAUTION: When the edge recording profile is selected, the customer manages recordings stored locally on an SD card. This means that there's no fallback if an SD card is unavailable or if the SD card fails.

For more information about which SD cards to use with your unit, see your Axis documentation.

Procedure

To configure edge recording from the device Settings tab:
  1. From the Devices page in Genetec™ Configuration web, select an Axis D2C camera.
  2. Click the Settings tab in the side pane.
  3. In the Video section, from the Recording profile list, select either the default Camera edge recording profile or your own edge recording profile.
Camera settings tab in Genetec Configuration web with an edge recording profile selected.
  4. Click Save.
  5. In the Video section, confirm that the Recording profile you selected earlier is displayed and that the Recording location is Camera edge.
To configure edge recording from the Recording profiles page:
  1. In the Genetec Configuration web sidebar, click System.
  2. From the Recording profiles list, select an edge recording profile.
  3. In the recording profile sidebar, click the Cameras tab.
  4. Click Associate cameras with profile then search for or select one or more Axis D2C cameras for edge recording.
When selecting cameras to associate with a recording profile, only relevant cameras are shown in the list. For example, only cameras that support edge recording are displayed in an edge recording profile.
Note: For a multisensor camera, each sensor is listed in the camera column as shown for an Axis Q6010-E camera in the following example.
Associate cameras with profile dialog in Genetec Configuration web showing four multisensor cameras to associate with the selected recording profile.
    1. If your camera is a multisensor camera, do one of the following:
      • Select all your camera sensors to associate with this recording profile.
      • Select one or more of your camera sensors to associate with this recording profile.
    2. Click Associate cameras.
Tip: If the recording profile settings don’t meet your needs, you can configure custom camera settings without being associated with a recording profile.
  5. (Optional) For multisensor cameras, repeat this procedure to select one or more sensors to associate with other edge recording profiles if required.

After you finish

Do one or more of the following:
  • Periodically review your edge storage utilization in the Storage section of your camera Overview tab.
  • Set up SD card wear level monitoring from the Axis camera admin System > Events page. For more information, see the Axis documentation.
